Jackson is a guitar manufacturer originally owned and operated by Grover Jackson, a partner of Wayne Charvel of Charvel Guitar Repair. It is probably best-known for its "Rhoads" V model guitar, originally designed and used by guitarist Randy Rhoads. Grover put his name on the Rhoads rather than the Charvel name because he felt the design was too shocking for Charvel's regular customers. This model inspired Grover to start the Jackson guitar company.
Wayne Charvel sold his interest in the Charvel name to Grover Jackson on November 10, 1978. The shop was located in Glendora, California (while using a PO Box in neighboring San Dimas) and manufactured guitars in this location from 1979 to 1986, when the Company merged with IMC (International Music Corporation), a Texas based importer of musical instruments. The factory then moved to Ontario, California.
In the Fall of 2002, Fender Musical Instrument Corporation purchased Jackson/Charvel, and operations were moved to the Fender factory in Corona, CA. Fender is now manufacturing guitars that are almost exactly like the original San Dimas Charvels, save for a few details. Both Jackson and Charvel models are being produced at Corona. This had short term negative consequences, as much of the artists who were on the company's roster list in th 1980s and 1990s left to endorse other guitar companies. Though significantly improved since the buyout, interference by FMIC is still stated to be a problem with Jackson. Most however see that some of the new things that FMIC has instituted, such as the fairly low prices on high end USA models and improved quality in lower end models that the company will begin to experience a turnaround.
Jackson Guitars has become known for its slender and elegant models, often with an aggressive look popular with harder rock and metal music.
The Jackson headstockAlmost all Jackson (and many Charvel) guitars share the typical Gibson Explorer-like pointy drooped headstocks, originally designed by Randy Rhoads. Various models feature a reversed pointy headstock with the tip pointing upwards. Another trademark are their so called "shark fins" fret inlays (see picture below).
Charvel/Jackson was the target of many copyright lawsuits from Fender which ended the use of Stratocaster styled headstocks for Jackson and Charvel guitars until recently.

Jackson SL2 Soloist Review:

Features : 10 1990 Jackson SL1. 24 Fret HSS Jackson Active Electronics, Volume, Tone, Mid-Cut/Boost knob. Floyd Rose Pro trem. Beautiful hand airbrushed purple and red lightning sky/desert scene graphic. Ebony board, Abalone logo/fins. Binding on neck and headstock, etc...
Sound : 7 I am a huge 80s thrash fan, Megadeth,Razor,Attacker,At War, etc...I play through basically any amp that I can turn the bass down crank the mids and treble and rip on.I swapped the bridge humbucker for a duncan screamin' deamon, making the guitar passive and adding that needed high gain and treble, I felt the Jackson active electronics were a little weak and pulled out all my mids, and I pulled the mid-freq knob out and replaced it with a 3-position coil tap toggle. I can know get an in phase setting, single coil, or out of phase. You can get a large variety of sounds out of the guitar.
Action, Fit, & Finish : 8 Never before have I played such a smooth peice of wood. Having cycled through a handful of vintage guitars, Kramer, Dean (1977 V), Gibson, Fender, you name it, nothing compares. Besides the old electronics this guitar is a work of art, the flat compound radius allows for lightning fast sweeps, unholy bends, and plain out shredding. Awesomely flat jumbo frets provide you with pure articulation, you just can't miss. My only gripe is the high sitting Jackson single coil pickup covers, my hand sometimes strikes them on the down-stroke, this may only apply to the active pickups, I never swapped them out I just took the pre-amp out of the guitar.
Reliability/Durability : 10 It is a solid instrument. I haven't had any tuning trouble, the finish has remained beautiful for 15 years, It is a work horse and a museum peice. A real gem of a guitar.
Overall Rating : 10 I have a lot of guitars, I sell guitars. This one makes the others look like toys to me, and the others are nice guitars. This is deffinately the ultimate shred machine, you will be amazed with the playability of this guitar. A++++++ Will deffinately continue to buy Jacksons for my collection in the future .

Jackson DK2 Dinky Review:

Features : 9 Jap make, 24 frets, 1 volume and 1 tone knob each, 5 way pick up selector, s/s/h seymour duncans SC 101 singles and JB TB4 humbucker etc etc For the price, I coudnt have asked for more, especially here in India.
Sound : 8 Sound is not so great, As of now, I have a roland cube 15, and I run it directly into it. I also have an aria STG 004 and the sounds from the two guitars are different, though I would'nt say that the tone from the dinky wins hands down. I have also played it with a Marshall MG 10 cd. I guess I havent played it with any real amp so far but I still love the sounds she can make. Though the sounds can range from bright to deep bassy distortion, I still have to play it with a better amp to see what she can really do.
Action, Fit, & Finish : 7 Action was high. I had to lower it significantly to get some good legato going. And though there is a little fret-buzz now, I would say that you would be hard pressed to find a guitar in this price range which does'nt give this problem, and the action is pretty low, so there. The first string doesnt stay on the fret board sometimes during legato or vibrato, which is irritating at times. There are no other issues that I came across.
Reliability/Durability : 7 Live playing ? Yes! Hardware is pretty solid, and should withstand lots of playing, and I'd easily depend on it without a backup.
Overall Rating : 9 I've been playing for around 3 years. I have an aria STG 004 apart from the dinky. Also, I have a Roland cube 15 along with a marshall mg 10 cd. Noeffects though. I compared it to the ibanez in the same price range and liked it hands down. Though if you compare the prestige series with its found wanting. I love the neck and the curvature it has. Also, the frest are pretty smooth and play out well. the only glitch it has is that the first string tends to slip out of the fretboard during vibrato. This I've heard from people, can be corrected using sand paper on the frets but I havent tried it out. I wish it came with a Boss GT 8
